On Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025, the kick-off meeting of the project Sludge2Energy will take place, entitled “Pyrolysis of Dried Sewage Sludge for the Production of Energy and Biochar, as a Multifactor Process for Energy Efficiency and Reduction of Gas Emissions”. The project’s acronym is Sludge2Energy and its code is A_T_2.1_0522. The meeting will be held at Harokopio University in Athens. The project is funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme.
The Lead partner of the project is the Italian university Università degli Studi Niccolò Cusano Telematica Roma, while the collaborating partners are: from Greece, the Hellenic Mediterranean University (School of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Agriculture, Laboratory of Natural Resources Management & Agricultural Engineering), from Egypt, Participatory Development Solutions; from Cyprus, District Local Government Organization of Larnaka; from Jordan, the Royal Scientific Society and Aqaba Water Company; and from Turkey, Dokuz Eylul University and the Manisa Water and Sewerage Administration General Directorate.
The project aims to address challenges related to sewage sludge management in central treatment facilities, seeking to reduce energy consumption and management costs, limit the spread of organic pollutants from sludge application to soil, and utilize dried sludge as a fuel for heat and electricity generation. At the same time, through the production of biochar via pyrolysis, the project contributes to energy savings, soil improvement, and carbon sequestration from the atmosphere.
The duration of the project is 36 months, starting on September 5th, 2025 and ending on September 4th, 2028.
The eligible budget of the project amounts to €2,800,600.00, with a funding rate of 89%, corresponding to €2,492,534.00.
